Downsizing? How to calculate how much space you need to store your furniture

If you’re thinking of downsizing but the prospect of getting rid of your furniture is too much to bear, Ezi Storage’s small self storage units in Osborne Park offer the perfect solution.

Of course, it’s one thing to know you need undercover storage, but it’s another to work out how much storage you need. Plus, considering that we offer whole storage units and single item storage, you may even discover you don’t have to rent out an entire unit.

Why consider putting your furniture in storage?

When you downsize, you’re likely to have more furniture and items in your old home than will fit in the smaller new home. For some people, they may be ready to get rid of their furniture by selling it, donating it or–depending on the condition–dumping it at the local tip. For others, you might want to keep some or all of your precious and sentimental furniture. That’s why self storage units are the way to go.

It’s not just people looking to downsize who are interested in finding undercover storage for their furniture. Just a few of the reasons why an Ezi Storage unit might be perfect for you include:

  • Space – if you’re looking to add more space to your existing home, storage allows you to keep your old furniture for when you need or want it.
  • Heirlooms – pieces of furniture can be heirlooms, antiques or just objects imbued with deep, sentimental value. Storing them safely allows you to keep them protected and out of your way.
  • Moving/renovating – if you’re moving house, whether to downsize or upscale or you’re having renovations take place putting your furniture in short term storage is surprisingly convenient, affordable, and practical.

How to calculate the space you need

We pride ourselves at Ezi Storage on offering more than secure self storage units. We offer stellar customer service as well.

That’s why we’ve developed a handy storage calculator to help you work out the exact size and space you need to store all of your chosen furniture.

However, before you start your calculations, it’s best to be prepared with all of the required information as the right space you’ll need will depend on a number of factors.

1. Type of furniture

Not all furniture is the same, and the way they will need to be stored will vary as well. Make a list of the various furniture you’re looking to store.

2. Accessibility

How accessible do you want the furniture to be? If you’re planning on accessing your stored goods regularly, you may need more space than if you’re going to be setting up and forgetting your items for a longer period of time.

3. Packing

How do you plan on packing and filling your storage space? If you have pieces of furniture that tessellate easily, you’ll be able to fit more in less space, for example.

4. Size and shape

Of course, when it comes to storage, size and shape certainly matter. If your dining room table is particularly long, or your couch is an odd shape, you’ll need to take this into consideration as well.

How to use the storage calculator

While our online storage calculator is pretty intuitive to use, here’s a rough guide to help you get started.

  • Remember that the calculator is only a rough estimate. Take into consideration the points above to ensure that you rent out sufficient space for your needs.
  • List all of the pieces of furniture you intend on storing before you get started and categorise them based on the groupings of our calculator. This will ensure you don’t miss any items or accidentally count something twice.
  • Click on the little arrows under the QTY (quantity) column to add the right number of items. Jump to the next item by hitting the TAB key on your keyboard.
  • At the bottom of the calculator, you’ll see a running count of the cubic metres you’ll need to fit all of your included furniture.

Tip: Fill in the number of articles then click the TAB button on your computer to go to the next item.

As you play around with the storage calculator, you might want to take the opportunity to play around with different storage options. Why? For one, it’s a lot easier to use our calculator than to sit around and work out the required storage size you need for each different option you’re considering.

Secondly, you might discover new combinations of furniture that will maximise storing efficiency and result in cost savings for you.

For example, if you’re downsizing, you might not realise just how much furniture and items you can fit in one of our undercover storage units. You might be able to fit more than just furniture from a few bedrooms and can include gardening equipment or more.

If you’re a student, you might need storage for just a few select items like a desk, bed, and bedside table. By having an accurate calculator, you’ll know just how much (or little as the case may be) storage you actually need.
