What can’t you store in a storage facility?

Storage units are a great option for keeping most of your belongings safe and secure. However, there are a few things that simply don’t belong in secure storage facilities. Here’s an exhaustive list of the things you won’t be allowed to keep in your Perth storage unit.

Anything combustible or otherwise hazardous

All secure storage facilities will not allow you to keep anything that could cause a fire, or explode, in your storage unit. Corrosive and toxic substances are also out. This means no petrol, fertiliser, lighter fluid, aerosols, kerosene lamps, or paint.

The reason for this is probably fairly obvious – it’s simply not safe.

Unless it’s climate controlled, temperatures can vary quite a bit inside a storage facility. This can wreak havoc with flammable materials, potentially causing them to combust. And, if a fire were to break out in your storage unit, it would potentially damage the whole facility.

All weapons and anything illegal

For many of the same reasons, your storage unit must also be kept clear of weapons. This includes guns, ammunition, swords, and anything else designed with the express purpose of inflicting injury on others. These items pose a serious safety risk and will violate your storage agreement.

Similarly, illegal substances and stolen goods are also banned from all Perth storage facilities. If such items are found in your storage unit, the facility is legally obligated to report it to the police.

Anything living

Storage units are great for most inanimate objects because they are enclosed spaces protected from the sun (and weather). These are perfect conditions for your prized possession, like antique furniture or a project car. However, they’re really not suitable for anything that’s living.

Any plants kept in a secure storage facility would quickly wither and die without the sunlight they need to survive. They also need regular watering and care, which no storage facility in Perth will provide.

Attempting to keep a pet in your storage unit is also no go – regardless of the type of animal. In addition to being cruel (particularly for animals that need ample space to run and play), it’s unsafe and unhygienic. Even aquariums are not suitable to be kept in storage unit… which brings us to our next point.

Anything that’s scented or wet

Moisture is the ultimate breeding ground for mould and bacteria – and these are major issues for a secure storage facility. Not only can they ruin everything that you have stored, they can create an unpleasant musty smell. Mould is also notorious for attracting bugs, mice, and other pests.

As such, it’s important that anything you put in your storage unit is dried off and free of unnecessary moisture.

While less dangerous to your health, strongly scented objects can also create an unpleasant storage unit environment. This is because the enclosed space often intensifies the smell, usually making it quite overpowering. It will also permeate everything else that’s kept in the unit and can be very difficult to get out.

All food items

While we all do our best to keep wildlife out, it’s a constant battle for storage facilities in Perth. From cockroaches and other bugs to mice and other vermin, there’s no shortage of pests trying to break in. And keeping any food items, no matter how well sealed, in your storage unit will only encourage them.

As such, all foodstuffs – for humans or otherwise – have no place in a secure storage facility. Some pests are so ruthless that even canned goods aren’t safe!
